Keep Walking in Sunshine

Years of storms had takentheir toll on the old windmill. Itswheel, rusted and fallen, lay silentin the lush bluegrass. Its onceanimated silhouette was now a tallmotionless steeple in the twilightsun.

I hadnt walked across ourold farm in fifteen years. Yet thesensations came flooding back. Icould smell the freshness of newmown alfalfa. I could feel the pingof the ice cold summer rain, and thesuns sudden warmth on my wetshoulders when it reappeared aftera brisk July thunderstorm.

Rain or shine, I used to walkthis path each day to see Greta.

She always made me smile, evenafter Sis and I had just had a bigsquabble. I would help Greta withher chores.

Then we would visit overa generous helping of her delicious homemadechocolate cookies and ice cream. Being confinedto a wheel chair didnt stop Greta from being afabulous cook.

Greta gave me two of the greatest gifts Iveever received. First, she taught me how to read.

She also taught me that when I forgave Sis for oursquabbles, it meant I wouldnt keep feeling like avictim. Instead, I would feel sunny.

Mr. Dinking, the local banker, tried toforeclose on Gretas house and land after herhusband passed away. Thanks to Pa and UncleJohan, Greta got to keep everything.

Pa said that it was the least he coulddo for someone talented enough toteach me to read!

Soon folks were comingfrom miles around to buy Gretashomemade cakes, pies, breads, cookies, cider, and ice cream. Hank, the grocery store man, came eachweek to stock his shelves and bringGreta supplies.

Greta even had me take abig apple pie to Mr. Dinking whobecame one of her best customersand friends. Thats just how Gretawas. She could turn anyone into afriend!

Greta always said, “Dear, keepwalking in sunshine!” No matterhow terrible my day started, Ialways felt sunny walking homefrom Gretas house-even beneaththe winter starlight.

I arrived at Gretas house todayjust after sunset. An ambulance hadstopped a few feet from her door, and its red lights flashing. WhenI ran into the old house, Gretarecognized me right away.

She smiled at me with herunforgettable twinkling blue eyes.

She was almost out of breath whenshe reached out and softly touchedmy arm. Her last words to me were“Dear, keep walking in sunshine!”

Im sure that Greta is walkingin the brightest sunshine shes everseen. And, Im sure that she heardevery word I read at her memorialservice.

I chose a beautiful verse by LeoBuscaglia. Its one that Greta taughtme to read many years ago…“Love can never grow old.

Locks may lose their brown andgold. Cheeks may fade and hollowgrow. But the hearts that love willknow, never winters frost and chill, summers warmth is in them still.”
