The University of Minnesota， Twin Cities (U of M) is a public research university located in Minneapolis and St. Paul， Minnesota， United States. It is the oldest and largest campus within the University of Minnesota system. The University was founded in February 25， 1851， but it did not begin enrolling students until 1867 because of financial problems and the American Civil War. The first Bachelor of Arts degrees were received in 1873， with Doctor of Philosophy degrees in 1888. The Duluth， Morris， Crookston and Rochester campuses joined the system in 1947， 1960， 1966 and 2006 respectively. The school stretches across the Twin Cities with a campus in each， though the Minneapolis site is considered the main campus of the University of Minnesota. This university has distinguished alumni， including former NFL star Buddy Bell， pianist Yanni， former CNN anchor Rick Sanchez and Walter Mondale， former vice president of the United States.

Twin cities： Minneapolis and St. Paul， known as the Twin Cities， are frequently recognized for sports， cleanliness， and volunteerism. Minneapolis nicknamed"City of Lakes". Its name is attributed to the city"s first schoolteacher， who combined mni， a Dakota Sioux word for water， and polis， the Greek word for city. Minneapolis has cultural organizations that draw creative people and audiences to the city for theater， visual art， writing， and music.St. Paul lies mostly on the east bank of the Mississippi River in the area surrounding its point of confluence with the Minnesota River， and adjoins Minneapolis， the state"s largest city. Saint Paul， along with its Twin City， Minneapolis， is known for its high literacy rate.
