到露营地的重要事情之一就是与昆虫进行斗争。为防止蚊虫叮咬，可以使用很多方法。其中喷射式的杀虫剂叫insect spray。“mosquito repellent”是喷在身上防止蚊虫叮咬的药。往身上涂药的说法是：Did you spray、put on the insect repellent？
急救箱是必需品之一。将扎在身上的刺拔出来的工具叫做止血钳、镊子“hemostat 、tweezer”。皮肤被割伤或刮伤时，要使用蘸有酒精的棉纱(alcohol cleansing pad)或经杀菌处理的棉纱(antiseptic cleansing wipe)消毒，要止血时使用止血粉“styptic powder”。然后再涂上软膏(antibiotic ointment)，用创可贴(Band aid)或绷带加以保护即可。

万圣节前夕
在美国有一个富于戏剧性的宗教节日是万圣节前夕(Halloween)。传说，在10月31日那天晚上，所有的巫婆、鬼怪和超自然的神怪都会到处游荡。传统上庆祝万圣节时，人们(尤其是小孩)都将自己扮成巫婆(witch)、鬼怪(ghosts and monsters)及吸血鬼(bloodsucker)的模样来互相逗乐。在这天晚上，孩子们打扮成各式模样，拿上一只南瓜灯笼，带着面具挨家挨户地敲门。当主人把门打开时，孩子们齐声说道：“Trick or treat？”(不给糖，就掏蛋。)这是一个好玩的游戏，主人早已准备好各式糖果及点心，等着这一批批可爱的淘气鬼的到来。
